Lake Park Elevator Fire Results In Evacuation

November 22, 2014

(Lake Park)– A fire in a silo at the Farmer’s Exchange Co-op Elevator in Lake Park has resulted in roughly a two-block area around the elevator being evacuated.

Assistant Fire Chief Mel Zevenbergen tells KUOO news the evacuation was ordered as a precaution. He says it’s a highly volatile situation and they’re worried about the possibility of a grain dust explosion.

Firefighters have been working throughout the afternoon trying to extinguish the fire. They were called to the scene shortly before Noon.

Zevenbergen says paramedics are standing by as a precaution and that they’re rotating firemen to prevent heat exhaustion.

Zevenbergen says they have no idea as to how long it will take to put the fire out and residents will be able to return to their homes. He says it’s pretty much a waiting game at this point as their options in putting out the fire are limited due to its nature.

No injuries have been reported so far.
