SL Man Injured In Motorcycle Mishap

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake man was injured Tuesday evening when a motorcycle he was operating left the road and went into the median on Highway 71 in Spirit Lake.

Police say 40-year-old Roger Smith of Tripp, South Dakota was driving a 1995 Chevrolet and 31-year-old Steve Haley of Spirit Lake was driving a 2000 Triumph Motorcycle northbound. Authorities say Smith was in the outside lane and Haley was in the inside lane when Smith attempted to merge into the inner lane, forcing Haley into the median where he layed down the motorcycle.

Haley was taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare with what was described as incapacitating injuries. No injuries were reported to Smith.

Smith was cited for improper lane change.

The mishap took place shortly after 7:00 p.m. on Highway 71 about 70 feet north of 22nd Street.
