House District 6 Candidates Sound Off On Immigration, Same Sex Marriage

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Immigration and same sex marriage were two other issues brought up in a candidate’s forum earlier this week featuring two republicans running for the Iowa House District 6 seat.

On the topic of illegal immigration, candidates Jeff Smith and Zach Whiting…both of Spirit Lake…agreed Iowa needs a law similar to one recently passed in Arizona. Smith says it’s imperative something be done now rather than later, adding Iowa isn’t immune to the issue just because it’s in the middle of the country.

On gay marriage, Smith said he would strongly push for a vote on a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being strictly between a man and woman. Whiting was critical of the state Supreme Court for opening the door to gay marriage, saying the three justices that allowed the issue to proceed should be replaced once a Republican Governor takes office.
