Police Identify Body Found 28 Years Ago In Lyon County

November 22, 2014

(Rock Rapids)– Police have identified a woman whose body was found in a roadside ditch in Lyon county 28 years ago.

Her name is Wilma June Nissen.

Lyon County Sheriff Blythe Bloemendaal says fingerprints were taken from the body and entered into an F-B-I database. Somehow, he says the records were only recently entered into.

Eventually, Criminalists in Des Moines developed a match, and one aspect of a mystery that has dogged Lyon county for nearly three decades was solved.

Bloemendaal says it is believed Nissen grew up in California. Her last known whereabouts were in Long Beach, California, in 1975, where she was arrested for prostitution.

It’s unknown who brought her to Iowa, where her body was found on October 4th, 1978. The sheriff says she was a victim of a homicide.

Now that she has been identified, Bloemendaal says the investigation into her death will begin in earnest.
