New Telephone Scam Making The Rounds

November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– The public is being alerted to yet another scam making the rounds locally.

Palo Alto County Sheriff Dennis Goeders says his office has had reports from some people who have received telephone calls from someone pretending to be a court official. The caller tells the person that a warrant has been issued for their arrest because they didn’t show up for jury duty. Goeders says if you protest, the caller will ask for your social security number, date of birth, or even a credit card number so they can allegedly verify the information and cancel the warrant.

Sheriff Goeders warns residents NOT to fall for it, saying it’s a scam and is only another attempt by identity thieves to steal your personal information.

Goeders adds no bonafide public or private agency will ever try to obtain personal information over the phone.

He says you should contact your local law enforcement agency if you’ve received such a call.
