The “Dig Out” Begins…

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Snow blowers and shovels are getting a workout today (Monday) as the Iowa Great Lakes digs out from nine inches of snow that fell from late Sunday until early this morning. North winds gusting to 40 miles-per-hour created huge drifts and whiteout conditions. Conditions were gradually improving by late-morning, and are expected to get even better this afternoon.

All main roads are open, but are 100 percent snow and ice covered.

Towing services are busy pulling out the scores of vehicles that went into the ditch.

The strong wind and a brief bout of freezing rain and sleet Sunday afternoon resulted in some widely scattered power outages this (Monday) morning. Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative says it received several reports of scattered outages, but nothing widespread.

Most area cities, including Milford, Spencer and Spirit Lake, have declared snow emergencies…meaning all vehicles need to be off the streets tonight for snow removal.
