Motorcyclists Will Need To Find Somewhere Else To Camp

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– The Okoboji city council Tuesday was presented with plans for an upcoming motorcycle ride being planned in the Iowa Great Lakes comemmorating the death of motorcyclist Lyle Donkersloot, who passed away a year ago.

An organizer of the event told the council the owner of the land where the former driving range is located in Okoboji has granted permission for participants to camp there. City Administrator Dennis Daly said that would violate the city’s zoning ordinance, which prohibits camping in commercially-zoned areas. He told the group they will need to look elsewhere for camping possibilities.

A spokeswoman said they’re expecting anywhere from 40 to four thousand motorcyclists for the event, which is to include a parade and “burnout” at the airport in Okoboji. Daly said the group will need permission to do that from the airport commission and the city of Spirit Lake, which owns the airport.
