Truck vs. Bike Crash Injures Spencer Man

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A truck-bicycle collision in downtown Spencer Tuesday sent one person to the hospital.

Spencer police say it took place just before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of Eighth Street and Grand Avenue.

Authorities say William Collins of Indianola was northbound on Grand Avenue in a 1998 Ford pickup pulling a jet ski on a trailer. Charles Meyer of Spencer was on a bicycle riding north on the sidewalk when he pulled into the intersection in front of Collins.

Meyer was knocked off the bike when he was hit by the pickup. He was taken to Spencer Hospital with a cut on his head and left hand, and pain in his left-rib area.

Witnesses told police the traffic light at the time was green for northbound traffic and the bike failed to stop for the red light to cross Grand Avenue. Meyer told officers he though the light was red for north and southbound traffic, and that’s why he entered the intersection.

No charges were filed in the crash.
