Emmet Co. Motorcycle Mishap Leaves Two Riders Seriously Injured

November 22, 2014

(Estherville)– The drivers of two motorcycles were seriously injured in a collision Saturday afternoon on Highway nine three miles west of Estherville just east of the intersection with Emmet County Road N-22.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says 23-year-old Benjamin Collins of Okoboji was driving a 2003 Honda eastbound on Highway Nine and was in a large group of motorcycles when he lost control, lying the motorcycle down on its left side in the middle of the highway. A motorcycle travelling behind Collins, a 2003 Harley Davidson driven by 36-year-old Robert Cody of Spencer, was unable to stop and ran over Collins and his motorcycle.

Collins and Cody were taken by ambulance to Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. They were then life-flighted to a Sioux Falls hospital. There was no immediate word on the extent of their injuries or condition.

2,500-dollars in damage was estimated to the motorcycle driven by Collins. An estimate of damage to the motorcycle driven by Cody wasn’t immediately available.

The mishap took place around 3:20 p.m. Saturday.
