(Estherville)– Emmet county authorities are investigating the death of a person who’s partially decomposed body was found in a field east of Armstrong.
The Sheriff’s Office says it received a 911 call shortly after Noon Monday from a farmer who had been doing some field work. The farmer told authorities he found a body in the middle of a field about a mile and-a-half east of Armstrong on Highway Nine. Upon arriving officers found a partially decomposed body laying on its back in the middle of the field. A 12-gauge shotgun was lying next to the body.
Upon closer examination officers determined the person died of a gunshot wound to the head. The body has been taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy.
Authorities aren’t sure if the death is a suicide or homicide.
So far the person’s identity is unknown. There was no identification found on the person, described as a male in his early 20’s wearing tennis shoes, blue jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt.
An investigation into the identity of the person and manner of death is ongoing. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has been called in to assist in the investigation.
