Mumps Vaccinations Scheduled For SL

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Public health officials are still trying to get the upper hand on a mumps epidemic that continues to grow.

So far, most of the effort has focused on one group in particular…those 18 to 25 years of age. Dickinson County Public Health Supervisor Mary Dunleavy says that group is at the highest risk of getting mumps, as well as the most likely group to spread it because many in that age group haven’t been fully vaccinated against mumps. Dunleavy says they’re concerned the epidemic will grow even more when college students return home for the summer.

An immunization clinic is scheduled for this Tuesday, May 2nd from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. for 18 to 25 year-olds at the Spirit Lake campus of Iowa Lakes Community College. The shots are free, but a five dollar donation will be accepted.

A similar clinic will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Emmetsburg campus of Iowa Lakes Community College.
