Demolition Of Old Courthouse Gets Underway

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Demolition of Dickinson county’s old courthouse got underway this (Tues.) morning.

A backhoe and wrecking ball started knocking a large hole in what used to be the Sheriff’s Office on the first floor and Auditor’s and Treasurer’s Offices on the second floor of the newer portion of the building (see photo). From there, the demolition crew will gradually make its way north toward the 1891 part of the courthouse.

The entire demolition process is expected to take about 30 days to complete. Construction on the second phase of the new courthouse will get underway almost immediately after that.

The demolition is resulting in a lot of onlookers on Hill Avenue. Motorists are being advised to use extra caution.

The perimeter of the old building is surrounded by a chain link fence to keep onlookers a safe distance away.
