Feasibility Of Regional Water Treatment Plant May Be Explored

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Several lakes area city councils this week will consider whether or not to proceed in hiring an engineering firm to look into the feasibility of a joint water treatment plant.

The study would involve the cities of Arnolds Park and Okoboji…currently served by the Central Water Treatment Plant in Okoboji; and Spirit Lake, which has it’s own treatment plant.

Talk of a possible joint venture surfaced last winter when the city of Spirit Lake received a consent decree from the state, requiring it to increase capacity of its treatment plant in order to be eligible for state funding for a new water tower on the city’s south side. Officials with Central Water say it’s just a matter of time before that facility will also have to be updated to meet new state and federal requirements.

The Spirit Lake and Okoboji city councils will review a proposal from the Howard R. Green firm of Sioux Falls for engineering services on a study for a joint treatment facility at their respective meetings Tuesday evening.
