(Spirit Lake)– Monday’s Spirit Lake school board meeting opened with several recognition ceremonies. One was for school board members themselves; another honored the district’s teachers; and a third recognized Jim Ladegaard for his 25 years of service as the school district’s attorney. Ladegaard, who’s retiring, also served three years as a board member. He thanked this and previous boards and superintendents for giving them the opportunity to serve them.
While the school said so-long to Ladegaard, it welcomed a new attorney, as board members approved the appointment of Spirit Lake attorney and Assistant Dickinson County Attorney Lonnie Saunders as the district’s new attorney.
In other business, the board approved a 6,200-dollar changeorder for the Sami Center to add a sump pump for the elevator and orchestra pits; and they approved 280-thousand in changeorders for the new gym at the high school. Most of that-more than 200-thousand dollars-is for a parking lot that will include some low impact development components…but not to the extent as first proposed due to cost.
The board also approved a 55-thousand dollar rennovation of the high school wrestling room. 35-thousand of the cost will come from phase one and two local option sales tax funds with the remaining 20-thousand from the Physical Plant and Equipment Levy. The work will be done in-house by the district’s maintenance personnel.
