SMU Invests In Proposed Power Plant

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer Municipal Utilities has signed on as an investor in the proposed Sutherland Generation Station Unit 4 proposed to be built near Marshalltown.

SMU’s investment in the proposed generating station will come through its membership in the North Iowa Municipal Electric Cooperative Association. The SMU board has authorized the purchase of eight megawatts of plant capacity, or just over one percent, for a total cost of 19.6 million dollars.

SMU General Manager Leon Rodas says the energy from the Sutherland Unit 4, along with SMU’s membership in long-term leases with other power sources means the utility has enough capacity to meet projected power needs in Spencer for the foreseeable future.

Other owners of Sutherland Generation Station Unit 4 include Cornbelt Power Cooperative, Central Iowa Power Cooperative and Interstate Power and Light Company…a subsidiary of Alliant Energy.
