(Spirit Lake)– The board of directors of the Northwest Iowa Corridor of Habitat for Humanity say they’ll be building a new home in Dickinson county this coming spring.
Board member Mary Thunhorst says they’re accepting applications for family consideration through December 31st. She says there are several criteria that need to be met, including need, meaning their current housing is inadequate; they must be able to pay a monthly mortgage; must be willing to partner with Habitat, meaning a minimum of 350 hours of sweat equity. Application forms are available at area libraries. Thunhorst says they’ll be reviewed by a committee which will evaluate the applications based on the criteria. The finalists will then be interviewed by phone and in person.
Thunhorst says they’re currently in the process of looking for property on which to build. In the past, she says property has been donated. Thunhorst hopes that will be the case again with this build.
Thunhorst adds they’re constantly looking for donations, which are tax deductible. She says the typical build takes about 60-thousand dollars just to get the necessary things done. Thunhorst says a certain amount of the work must be done by licensed professionals in order to meet code.
