Grant Awarded For Dickinson Co. Nature Center Project May Be In Jeopardy

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A grant awarded to Dickinson county to help rennovate a building into a Nature Center could be in jeopardy.

Steve Rasmussen of the Messenger of the Healing Winds Foundation told the board of Supervisors Tuesday the foundation’s board will be re-evaluating a 100-thousand dollar grant siting a lack of progress and local support for the project. He says support from the board of supervisors has been “tepid at best”.

John Walters of the Dickinson County Conservation Board admitted there was a breakdown in communication, saying his board should have contacted the foundation when it was decided to hire a new architect to draw up new plans.

Walters added, however, the project’s fate lies in the hands of the board of supervisors and whether they’ll come up with the estimated 75-thousand dollars that’s needed for electrical work in the facility.

The supervisors Tuesday gave no indication as to whether they’ll be able to do that. In the meantime, they agreed to draft a letter to the Messenger of the Healing Winds Foundation board outlining the reasons behind the various delays and changes in the project.

The foundation’s board will meet February 22nd at their headquarters in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Rasmussen says it’s likely they’ll decide to re-evaluate the status of the grant at that time.
