(Spirit Lake)– A Spirit Lake High School Principal who says he was forced to resign has officially filed a letter with the school board asking it to rescind his resignation.
Jed Sherman, along with his attorney, Rick Barry of Spencer, were at Monday’s school board meeting requesting the board act on the matter.
School board President Beth Will acknowledged the board had received Sherman’s letter, which she said has been forwarded to the school district’s legal counsel. Will says the board will decide whether or not to act on it pending an opinion from the school district’s attorney.
Monday evening’s meeting was attended by another huge crowd that overflowed the board room and filled an adjoining hallway. A couple of representatives of the citizen’s group CARES (Coalition for A Responsible Education System) addressed the board. Spokesman Mike Johnson said the group is willing to work with the board in a cooperative manner. He says the two main issues they want addressed are over Sherman’s resignation and the district’s financial situation.
And when it comes to that, several went into Monday’s meeting under the impression the board was going to address the district’s financial crisis. Will told the crowd administrators had earlier in the day drawn up a list of potential reductions that had been presented only earlier in the day (Mon.) to various building committees for review. Will added they’re also waiting on some additional budgeting figures from the state.
She says the board hopes to have a proposed tax rate for consideration at its March meeting.
