SL School District Voters Reject PPEL

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– It’s turning out to be a worse-case scenario when it comes to budget cuts in the Spirit Lake school district.

Voters Tuesday rejected a Physical Plant and Equipment Levy. The vote was 527 yes to 773 no. 1,300 people voted for a turnout of 21 percent of the eligible voters in the district.

The levy of $1.34 per one thousand dollars of valuation would have been in effect for 10 years. The money would have been used on things such as building maintenance and purchasing certain equipment, among other things.

That means the school board, which meets in special session tonight (Wednesday), will likely be forced to make the full amount of cuts from the upcoming fiscal year’s budget that were originally proposed several weeks ago.

The board was originally scheduled to act on the reductions last week but postponed the action until after the outcome of the levy election was known.

The school board meets at 8:00 this (Wednesday) evening in the new gym at Spirit Lake High School.
