(Ruthven)– Some more Trumpeter Swans are about to be released in the region.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say a pair of the birds will be released at Lost Island Marsh five miles north of Ruthven at 10:00 a.m. June 24th. The release will take place in a public parking area on the west side of the road one mile north of the Lost Island Nature Center.
The event will be held rain or shine.
Officials say it will also pay tribute to Wildlife Biologist Ron Howing’s involvement in wetland and Canada goose restoration and management of Iowa’s Natural Resources.
Howing is retiring after a 50-year career with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The Trumpeter Swans being released are part of the DNR’s statewide Trumpeter Swan restoration effort, with hopes they will restore a wild free-flying population in Iowa.
