(Spirit Lake)– The Iowa Great Lakes dodge a bullet Thursday and Thursday night when it comes to severe weather.
Very intense to severe thunderstorms moved into the region from southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska bringing flooding rains, large hail and damaging wind to some areas.
Most of the large hail reports came out of southwest Minnesota. One and three-quarter-inch diameter hail was reported by a trained spotter about a mile east of Adrian around 1:20 p.m. One inch diameter hail pelted the Round Lake area a half hour later. Three quarter inch diameter hail was reported about four miles east of Okabena at 2:05 p.m.
An estimated 60 mile-per-hour wind gust knocked down some tree branches about a mile west of George in Lyon county shortly after 2:30 p.m.
Another wave of severe storms passed to the west and north of the Iowa Great Lakes Thursday night. However, the area didn’t escape some high wind that broke out on the back side of that system. Wind gusting in excess of 60 miles-per-hour blasted through the lakes area between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. It brought down tree limbs and power lines in Terril and near Boys Town in the Terrace Park area of West Okoboji.
