Dickens & Fostoria Firefighters Respond To Outbuilding Fire

November 22, 2014

(Fostoria)– A fire early this (Thurs.) morning destroyed an outbuilding on a farm site near Fostoria.

Clay county authorities say they were called to 3115 240th Avenue of rural Spencer shortly before 1:00 a.m. after a neighbor reported a farm building was on fire at that location.

The Fostoria and Dickens Fire Departments were called to the scene. Fostoria Fire Chief Tim Kelsch says the building was completely engulfed when they arrived. He says the building was being used to store diesel fuel. Kelsch says several other nearby buildings also caught on fire due to fuel containers exploding.

In addition to losing the main building where the fuel was stored, Kelsch says a roof of a barn had severe damage the vinyl siding on a house was melted.

The owner of the buildings wasn’t present at the time of the blaze.

In addition, Kelsch says one sheep perished in the blaze.

Damage estimates exceed 100-thousand dollars.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fostoria and Dickens Fire Departments and the State Fire Marshal’s office.

Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow says one firefighter was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion. No other injuries were reported.
