Shots Fired At Vehicles Results In Portion Of Hwy 86 Being Closed

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A report of two vehicles that had windows shot while they were traveling south on Highway 86 Saturday evening resulted in a stretch of the road between Highway nine and the Minnesota border being closed for about five hours.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says it received the reports shortly after 8:30 p.m. Officers shut down the road and secured the scene. A perimeter was established and the Multi Agency Response Team cleared the area where the shooters were believed to be located.

After investigating, it was determined two 13-year-old boys had fired air rifles at passing vehicles in the area of Highway 86 and 130th Street.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities say the incident remains under investigation and charges are expected.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Okoboji, Spirit Lake, Arnolds Park, Milford and Spencer Police Departments; the Clay and Jackson County Sheriff’s Offices; Iowa Department of Natural Resources; Iowa and Minnesota State Patrols; Iowa Fire Marshal; Multi-Area Response Team and Dickinson County Emergency Management.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Department ladder truck, the HEAT unit, Lakes Regional Healthcare Ambulance and Spirit Lake First Responders were all placed on standby, but weren’t needed.
