Mini Wakan Shelter Project Awarded Grant

November 22, 2014

(Orleans)– A project spearheaded by the Spirit Lake Protective Association to renovate and rehabilitate the historic shelter house at Mini Wakan State Park on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake has been awarded a 100-thousand dollar grant through the Okoboji Foundation.

Joe Ulman of the Spirit Lake Protective Association says they’re extremely grateful for the grant, the first funding that’s been awarded for the project.

Ulman is hopeful it will serve as an impetus for other grants they’ve applied for.

He says the goal is to raise one million dollars, but he says they’re still working with the DNR to find out exactly how much will be needed for the shelter house project. He says a portion of the money will be set aside for an endowment to help with future maintenance and other projects at the park.

Those wanting more information on the project or wishing to make a donation can visit the Spirit Lake Protective Association’s website at www.theslpa.org. You can also write them at Spirit Lake Protective Association; Mini-Wakan Committee; P.O. Box 95; Spirit Lake, Iowa…51360.
