(Spirit Lake)– The November 4th General Election is still several weeks away, but the Dickinson County Auditor’s Office is already busy processing requests for absentee ballots.
Dickinson County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections Nancy Reiman tells KUOO news since absentee voting started back on September 25th, her office has processed 1,049 applications as of Wednesday. She says that’s about half of the total number of absentee ballots requested in the 2004 General Election. Reiman says the traffic has been very steady, adding there’s still several weeks to go yet before election day.
Reiman says there are two different ways to vote absentee. You can do it in person at the Auditor’s Office in the courthouse, or you can complete an application, return it to the Auditor’s Office, and a ballot will be mailed to you.
Something new this election cycle, according to Reiman, is a provision that allows people to register to vote on election day at their respective precinct. Those doing that will be required to bring with them proof of residency including a photo I.D. and other evidence, such as a utility bill. But to save time, Reiman encourages everyone to register prior to election day. The registration provision pertains to anyone who hasn’t voted before, as well as those who are new residents to Dickinson county.
