(Spirit Lake)– Sentencing was held this (Monday) morning for one of three defendants charged in an altercation outside a Milford gentleman’s club last April that eventually claimed the life of 25-year-old Matthew Begtrup of Sioux Falls.
Scott Adair of Crossett, Arkansas pleaded guilty to a charge of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the case back on September 15th of this year.
Judge John Duffy this (Monday) morning sentenced Adair to a minimum of 10 years with the Iowa Department of Corrections at Oakdale. He was given credit for 196 days already served and was ordered to pay $10,875.50 to the Iowa Crime Victims Fund, along with additional restitution to be determined.
In announcing the sentence, Judge Duffy said he considered Adairs prior record, which includes two felony convictions in Arkansas.
The judge added that since Adair pleaded guilty to a forcible felony, that there’s no provision available for a suspended sentence or other relief.
Asked by the Judge if he wanted to make a statement, Adair said…quote…”I never intended for anything like this to happen. If I can say anything, I’m sorry”…unquote.
Sentencing for another defendant in the case, Jon Swan, also of Crossett, Arkansas, was to have been held as well this (Monday) morning but was continued at the last minute on a request for more time to complete a pre-sentence investigation. Swan also pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the case.
A third defendant in the case, Michael Friedrichs of Forest City, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the first degree. His trial, originally set for September 23rd, was continued.
