Fire Destroys SL Kiwanis Paper Trailer; Believed To Have Been Deliberately Set

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Officials say it appears a fire Sunday that destroyed the Kiwanis newspaper recycling trailer near the Spirit Lake Public Works Building was deliberately set.

Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news a neighbor discovered the trailer was on fire shortly after seeing some kids run from the scene.

Spirit Lake firefighters found the trailer completely engulfed when they arrived.

Putting out the blaze was tedious. Kollasch says a public works employee had to use a skid loader to pull apart the burning paper so firefighters could put it out.

He says firefighters had all they could do to contain the blaze to the trailer because of 50 to 60 mile-per-hour winds that were blowing at the time.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 3:00 p.m. They were there about an hour.

Anyone with any information in the case should contact the Dickinson County Crimestoppers at 336-2345. Information that leads to an arrest in the case is eligible for a 200-dollar reward.
