(Milford)– Firefighters from four area fire departments battled a corn field fire west and south of Milford Tuesday afternoon.
Milford firefighters were initially called to the scene near the intersection of 160th Avenue and 230th Street six miles west and two miles south of Milford shortly after 1:00 p.m. It didn’t take long to realize additional manpower was needed due to the nature of the fire and a strong south wind. The Lake Park, Everly and Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire Departments were then summoned.
Firefighters were assisted by a neighboring landowner who used a disc to finally contain and extinguish the fire.
Milford Fire Chief Jim Carpenter says the blaze burned an estimated 100 acres of both picked and standing corn.
Carpenter says it’s believed the fire was the result of a spark from a stalk chopper hitting a rock.
Firefighters were on the scene about two and-a-half hours.
No injuries were reported.
