(Spencer)– A local hospital is doing its part to help school children and teachers in a world away from here–Afghanistan.
Susan Zulk of Spencer Hospital says it stems from an e-mail from Gary Knoer, a Registered Nurse at the hospital who’s currently stationed in Afghanistan. She says Gary’s daughter, Christine Mehan, who also works at Spencer Hospital, received the e-mail and shared it with hospital staff.
In the e-mail, Gary…who assesses schools in Nangarhar Province…writes about how supplies such as pens, markers and chalk are needed. He says he has pockets on the left arm of his uniform that holds three pens and the students always ask for them. He says the only problem is that dozens to hundreds of students are present at each stop, requesting pens.
Zulk says that’s where Spencer Hospital decided to get involved by serving as a place where local residents can drop off such items, which they will ship to Knoer.
Pens, markers, chalk, solar calculators and other school supplies can be dropped off at the front desk at Spencer Hospital. Zulk says they’ll be accepting them until Friday, February 13th.
She adds a local school has even gotten involved. Zulk says students from Sacred Heart Elementary in Spencer donated school supplies as part of their National Catholic School Week mission to provide service to others.
