DNR To Hold Informational Meeting On Improving Silver Lake

November 22, 2014

(Lake Park)– Those with interests on Silver Lake are being urged to attend a meeting next week in Lake Park.

Jeff Berckes of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Watershed Improvement Program says they’ll present the results of their research into Silver Lake and the issues that resulted in it being placed on a list of impaired waterways in the state.

He says it’s on the list due to poor water clarity resulting from high levels of turbidity and algae. Berckes says the cause seems to be coming from soil erosion, synthetic fertilizers, livestock manure and phosphorous.

Berckes says he’ll present the findings from their research at the February 17th meeting. It begins at 6:00 p.m. that evening at the Lake Park Community Center.

In addition to presenting their findings, Berckes says DNR staff will also be taking comments from the public on what they think should be done to clean up the lake.

Those who cannot attend the February 17th meeting can submit comments in writing to the DNR by March 6th. Comments should be sent to Jeff Berckes, care of Iowa DNR; Wallace State Office Building, 502 East ninth Street; Des Moines…50319.

Berckes says staff from the DNR’s Lake Restoration program, Watershed Improvement program and Fisheries and Wildlife Bureau will be on hand.
