Rezoning Request For Golf Course Development Draws Opposition

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Opposition has surfaced to a proposal to rezone some land in Country Acres Estates, or the Stoever subdivision, and Southern Hills phases three and four in Spirit Lake. The rezoning would be the final piece in the puzzle for the golf course development being proposed by developers Marty and Alex Benskin and Glen Maddox.

A couple of people who own houses and land in the Country Acres Estates area spoke in opposition of the rezoning proposal during a hearing at Tuesday’s Spirit Lake city council meeting.

The developers have requested the area be rezoned from residential to multi-family. But some neighboring landowners told the council they’re concerned over the effects condominiums, duplexes and similar complexes would have on their properties.

Brad Beck, an engineer representing the developers at Tuesday’s meeting, said they’ve agreed to scale back on the number of multi-family units to try to address some of the concerns. But councilman Steve Balm said he’s concerned those concessions aren’t enough, adding there are still too many unanswered questions about the proposed development. He suggested a meeting be held between city officials, the developers and adjoining landowners. Other council members agreed. The rezoning hearing was then continued to the council’s next regular meeting, April 28th.
