(Granville)– DNR officials say a problem with a dike resulted in an unknown amount of manure getting into a creek in O’Brien county.
Ken Hessenius, Supervisor of the DNR’s field office in Spencer, says it happened at a dairy confinement about two miles east of Granville.
Hessenius says the producer, Brian Roorda of Roorda Dairy, discovered the leak in an earthen basin used for manure storage around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. Roorda traced the leak to a previously undiscovered tile line that lies under the basin’s dike.
It’s unknown how much, but Hessenius says some manure did make its way into Mudd Creek.
Hessenius says Roorda acted quickly to stop the flow by building three temporary dams. The contained manure is being pumped back into the storage structure.
As of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Hessenius says there was no evidence of a fish kill.
DNR officials remain on the scene providing technical assistance as repairs continue to the dike. They’re also continuing to test water quality.
