Explosions, Fire, Result In Evacuation

November 22, 2014

(Brewster, Mn.)– Residents of Brewster, Minnesota were evacuated late Saturday after a fire at the Minnesota Soybean Processors plant.

Nobles County Sheriff’s officials went door-to-door to ask all the town’s residents to evacuate. Residents were allowed to return home early Sunday.

Nobles County Sheriff Kent Wilkening says the fire was reported around 10:00 p.m. Saturday. He says “there were a couple of explosions and some tanks were on fire”.

The cause is being investigated.

Fire departments from throughout the region, including Lake Park, responded to the scene.

The plant processes soybeans into biodiesel, so there was concern over the safety of nearby residents.

Highway 60 was closed in that area and the nearby Union Pacific rail line was stopped.

Atleast 18 people went to an emergency shelter.
