(Des Moines)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking public comment on proposed rules that would establish requirements to protect and manage the water quality of the state’s surface waters.
DNR officials say the proposed changes would establish numerical water quality criteria for chloride for the protection of aquatic life; establish numerical water quality criteria for sulfates for the protection of aquatic life and livestock watering; and would remove criteria for total dissolved solids and associated implementation procedures.
More information on the proposed rule change can be seen at www.iowadnr.gov/water/standards/chloride.html.
The DNR is holding a series of public meetings around the state to hear public comments on the proposed changes. A couple of those meetings will be held Tuesday (July 7th) in our area. One is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Orange City Public Library in Orange City; another will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the Spencer Public Library in Spencer.
Comments can also be submitted in writing to Adam Schneiders; Iowa DNR, 502 East Ninth Street; Des Moines, Iowa…50319; or by email to adam.schneiders@dnr.iowa.gov.
Comments are being accepted until August 14th.
