Rezoning Request Pits Mayor Against Homeowners

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– A request to rezone some property wound up being withdrawn at the last minute at Monday’s Milford city council meeting.

The matter had the city’s Mayor, Virgil Wahlman, who owns lots in the Country Meadows development, at odds with some existing homeowners in that area.

Wahlman was requesting the lots be rezoned to a multi-family classification to allow for the construction of some two-level four-plexes.

Because of his personal involvement in the matter, Wahlman turned the gavel over to Mayor Pro-Tem Don Lamb during a public hearing on the matter at Monday’s meeting.

Among those opposing the request were those with single-family homes in another part of the development. They cited concern over possible impacts on property values, aesthetics and other issues. They requested the single-family concept be continued throughout the development.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission was deadlocked on the issue and couldn’t make a recommendation to the council. Two members, including the chairman who is Wahlman’s son, cited conflicts of interest; two others didn’t feel comfortable making a recommendation. One seat on the commission is currently vacant.

After further discussion and hearing more concerns from neighbors, Wahlman withdrew his rezoning request, saying he will have to pass up a good opportunity to sell the property.
