(Arnolds Park)– Some leaking trucks left behind a trail of slippery goo on portions of Highways 86 and 71 in the lakes area Thursday afternoon that made for a slick commute for some motorists.
Authorities say the side-dump semis owned by a Minnesota company were hauling what was described as a slimy orange substance that leaked, leaving a trail of slippery goo as they made their way down Highway 86, then onto Highway 71 at the north edge of Milford, and on into Arnolds Park.
Officers say the trucks were headed for the landfill east of Arnolds Park.
Authorities say a large amount of the substance leaked out at the intersection of Highway 71 and 202nd Street near Emerald Hills Golf Course.
Crews with the Iowa Department of Transportation had to bring in equipment to scrape the slime off the road and put down some sand.
The trucking company was also expected to bring in some equipment and manpower.
Authorities say the substance was tested and deemed not to be hazardous. They say it was a byproduct from a soybean processing plant.
No accidents were reported as a result of the incident.
The Milford, Arnolds Park and Okoboji Police Departments assisted in tracking down the trucks, along with the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Enforcement Division.
