(Spencer)– A collision involving two cars and a tractor Friday in Clay county sent three people to the hospital.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says it took place shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Highway 18 at the Little Sioux River bridge just east of Spencer.
According to authorities, 59-year-old Llewellyn Brown of Algona was crossing the bridge eastbound when her vehicle collided with a ripper being pulled by a tractor operated by 20-year-old Seth Small of Royal. Brown’s vehicle then went into the north ditch and struck a tree on the east side of the bridge.
Authorities say Small had just gotten off his tractor when a vehicle driven by 64-year-old John Lee of Graettinger came upon the scene headed east. Lee’s vehicle collided with the tractor and with Small, throwing him over the bridge and onto the ground below.
Lee’s vehicle skidded past the tractor, struck the ripper and came to rest on the highway.
Brown, Small and Lee were all taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital. Brown was treated and released. Small and Lee were transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls with non-incapacitating injuries.
A 1997 Ford Crown Victoria driven by Brown and a 2002 Buick Century driven by Lee were both totaled; damage to a 1994 International Harvester tractor driven by Small and owned by Greg Toft of Spencer was estimated at five thousand dollars.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Spencer Fire Department, Dickens Fire and Rescue, Spencer ambulance and the Iowa State Patrol.
Authorities say the collision remains under investigation.
