First Public H1N1 Vaccination Clinic Scheduled For Dickinson County

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)—What will be the first public H1N1 vaccination clinic in Dickinson county will be held this coming Tuesday from 3:00 until 9:00 p.m. at the Dickinson County Expo Building in Spirit Lake.

The vaccine will be available to ANYONE WHO WANTS IT-not just those in the priority group as was the case earlier.

No appointments are being scheduled-vaccine will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Mary Dunleavy of Dickinson County Public Health says they’ll provide vaccine as long as it’s available. Once the available doses are gone and more vaccine is received in the future, additional clinics will be scheduled.

The vaccine is only available through public health and is provided at no cost.

It’s available in either a nasal mist spray or an injection. Public Health staff will do an assessment at the clinic on a case by case basis to determine which form of the vaccine is best for that person.

Officials say with the nasal spray you may get a few symptoms of H1N1 flu, but not actually get the flu. That’s because the nasal spray version is a weakened live virus, while the injection is a dead, inactivated virus.

The injection consists of one shot in the arm, except for children ages nine and under-they’re encouraged to get two shots spaced one month apart.
