Doctor Pleads Guilty To Charges In Prostitution Ring

November 22, 2014

(Sioux Falls, S.D.)– The only person formally accused of paying for sex in what authorities say was an internet prostitution ring has pled guilty.

Sioux Falls doctor Joshua Payer pled guilty Wednesday to one count of distribution of a controlled substance and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.

Prosecutors dropped the other charges against Payer as part of a plea deal.

The drug count stems from prescriptions for oxycontin that authorities say Payer wrote for the man allegedly to have operated the ring.

Payer voluntarily surrendered his medical license in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa in September.

He was arrested at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake. He was working at the time for a company that provides emergency room physician coverage.

Payer has been confined to house arrest since September. He will be sentenced in February.
