Hunting Incident Fatally Injures Sheldon Man

(Sutherland)– A Sheldon man was fatally injured Monday while hunting deer southwest of Sutherland in O’Brien county.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say 60-year-old Jeffrey Marienau of Sheldon was putting away his gun when the .44 caliber black powder revolver went off, hitting him in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the incident took place around 10:00 a.m. Monday as Marienau was hunting with his brother southwest of Sutherland.

The DNR was assisted on the scene by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, Sutherland Police Department, Paulina Police Department and the O’Brien County Conservation Board.
