Controversy Swirls Over Resignation Of Okoboji Head Football Coach

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– Letters of resignation recently submitted by Okoboji Head Football Coach Travis Schipper and one of his assistants has some in the district asking some questions.

The Okoboji School Board took no action on the letters at their regular monthly meeting Monday evening. But some people in the crowd told the board they feel Schipper is being forced out and that he’s being made the scapegoat for the low number of students going out for football.

Superintendent Bob Miller told the crowd the board couldn’t comment on the matter, saying it was a personnel issue.

Crowd members also referenced e-mails and letters making the rounds in the community.

School board member Phil Miklo said he’s hoping the board could meet with Schipper to maybe work something out. School Board President Chris Stein said Schipper would have to request such a session, which under law, would be closed to the public.

Schipper, who was at Monday evening’s meeting, requested the board take immediate action on the resignation, saying damage to his authority as head coach had already been done.

The resignations may be on the agenda for a special board meeting set for 7:00 a.m. December 20th. As of now the only item on the agenda is a closed session for the annual evaluation of the superintendent.
