(Everly)– The theft of the baby Jesus from a nativity scene at the Everly City Park has landed three people in jail on theft charges.
Clay County Sheriff Randy Krukow tells KUOO news a city employee noticed this (Fri.) morning the nativity scene had been vandalized and that a piece of the scene, the baby Jesus, was missing. The employee then followed a set of footprints in the snow to the old school and noticed the windows in the front door were broken out. The employee then relayed that information to the Sheriff’s Office. A deputy arrived and was able to follow the footprints to a residence on Wilson Street. After speaking with several subjects, the deputy determined they were the ones allegedly involved.
21-year-old James Martinez, 28-year-old Travis Woods and 19-year-old Mariah Ziebell were taken into custody and were booked into the Clay county jail on charges of theft in the fifth degree and criminal mischief in the fifth degree.
Krukow says deputies were able to recover the piece, which is being returned to the city of Everly.
