(Melvin)– A fire at a northwest Iowa hog confinement operation has killed nearly 2,000 head of hogs.
The blaze broke out around 6:30 a.m. Sunday at the confinement near Melvin.
Melvin Fire Chief Steve Heitritter says firefighters were on the scene about five and-a-half hours. He estimates more than 1,800 hogs died in the blaze.
Heitritter believes the fire was the result of an electrical problem in a small building that connects two larger confinement buildings.
A dollar estimate of damage wasn’t immediately available.
