Recent Cold Causing Concern Over Frozen Pipes

November 22, 2014

(Milford)– The recent extreme cold has area utilities reminding water customers to take some extra precautions to prevent frozen pipes.

Officials say if you’ve had such a problem in the past, that you should start running water the size of a pencil lead. They say the constant stream will be enough to keep pipes from freezing and possibly bursting.

If you’re going to be away from your home for several days, they recommend you turn off the main water valve and drain your pipes.

The extreme cold has also caused some water mains to break in cities throughout the region. Officials say the extreme cold and frost causes the ground to shift, which in turn can cause pipes and water mains to break.
