Red Cross Announces Changes To Training Programs

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Some changes are in the offing for some health and safety programs offered through the Iowa Great Lakes chapter of the American Red Cross.

Cindy Voss, the chapter’s Executive Director, says the changes are based on extensive research and the community’s needs. She says the most noticeable changes are with the American Red Cross layman CPR courses, which will now have a two-year certification. Participants will still receive a reminder to take an optional free online refresher course throughout their two-year certification. New curriculum will be released in March. The new certification was effective as of January 1st, 2011.

In addition, Voss says the Red Cross is now offering a hands-on CPR initiative. She says the purpose of the new initiative is to empower all citizens to do something until professional responders arrive. The 30 minute course does not include a written certification. The course is available to employees, groups or organizations. Those interested in scheduling a course should contact the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross at (712) 262-1574.

Online registration for all course offerings is now available. The Iowa Great Lakes Chapter’s health and safety course offerings can be found at www.iglredcross.org or by calling the number above. The schedule includes offerings in each of the counties served by the Red Cross, including classes in Spirit Lake, Estherville, Emmetsburg, Algona and Spencer.
