Vigilance Of Homeowner Cited For Preventing Possible House Fire

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Officials say the vigilance of a homeowner probably prevented what could have been a major house fire early this (Tuesday) morning.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news firefighters were called to 25780 Martin Drive in the East Okoboji Beach area after a person living at that address reported smelling something hot coming from an outside deck.

Upon arriving firefighters learned the homeowners had placed a heater under the deck last weekend to thaw some frozen pipes. The heater caused some wooden posts to start smoldering. Kollasch says firefighters removed the heater and sprayed water on the deck to cool it down.

Kollasch says if it hadn’t been noticed when it was, there could have been a major fire.

Spirit Lake firefighters got the call around 12:30 a.m. They were on the scene about a half-hour.

No injuries were reported.
