This Winter Not As Severe As Last…So Far, Atleast

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– While this winter has seemed relentless at times with snow and cold, it still isn’t as bad as what we had a year ago–especially when it comes to snowfall.

According to statistics compiled for the National Weather Service, 41.6 inches of snow has fallen here at the KUOO studios so far this season (as of Wed. Feb. 9th). That compares with 57.2 inches at the same time a year ago, when a grand total of 61.7 inches of snow fell for the entire season.

While we hopefully won’t reach that this season, we still have the rest of February and all of March…traditionally the snowiest month of the season…to go through. And measurable snowfall could even still be possible in April. But atleast if it happens then, we know it won’t stick around long.

And while we’ve had several cold snaps this winter, the cold hasn’t been as extreme as a year ago. There were several days in early January, 2010 when overnight lows surpassed 20 degrees below zero, including 29 below January 2nd, 22 below January 3rd and 25 below January 4th, 2010. The coldest overnight low recorded so far this winter has been 17 degrees below zero which occurred Tuesday of this week (Feb. 8th).
