(Spirit Lake)– A natural gas leak and tree limbs on fire that came in contact with power lines kept the Spirit Lake Fire Department busy Sunday.
Fire Chief David Kollasch tells KUOO news the first call came in around 4:30 p.m. when firefighters were called to a gas leak at the corner of 30th Street and Aurora Avenue. Kollasch says gas was leaking from a meter at that location. Firefighters and police cordoned off the area as a precaution while crews with Black Hills Energy fixed the leak. Firefighters were on the scene about a half-hour.
Spirit Lake firefighters were called about an hour later to a report of a branch on fire in a tree in the area of 15th Street just off of Hill Avenue in Spirit Lake. Kollasch says firefighters stood by while crews with Alliant Energy fixed an electric line that had made contact with the branch. The fire was contained to the tree.
At about the same time, Spirit Lake firefighters were called to a branch on fire that had fallen onto a power line in the area of Weather End in the Triboji Beach area north of Monarch Cove. Kollasch says firefighters monitored the situation until crews with Alliant Energy arrived to repair the line. That fire was also contained to the tree.
Firefighters were on the scene at both locations for about an hour.
