(Spirit Lake)– The National Weather Service issued its updated spring flood outlook Thursday, and Brigadier General Derek Hill, Director of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management, says while the odds for moderate to severe flooding in northwest Iowa have decreased, that there’s still a strong likelihood for atleast minor flooding. He says that’s the case for the upper Floyd River, mid and upper levels of the Little Sioux River. Chances for more significant flooding are greater for the upper reaches of the West Fork of Des Moines River and the Big Sioux River.
Mild temperatures in mid-February melted most of the snow pack in northwest Iowa, reducing the threat of moderate to severe flooding for now. But Hill says that could change if heavy amounts of rain or snow fall over the next few weeks.
March has been designated as Flood Awareness Month. Hill is encouraging those who live in flood-prone areas to review their preparedness in the event flooding actually does occur.
