Local Paving Projects Receive Awards

(Des Moines)– Two projects in Dickinson county were awarded the best in Iowa for their category at the Iowa Concrete Paving Association’s 47th Annual Concrete Paving Workshop recently held in Des Moines.

The city of West Okoboji, in partnership with the Dickinson County Trails Board, won the top award in the Recreational Trails category for the Garlock Slough Trail project on the southwest side of West Lake Okoboji. The 1.8 mile trail extends along Highway 86 from near Three Cross Road in West Okoboji to Lighthouse Point and the entrance to Emerson Bay. They trail was constructed by Howrey Construction of Rockwell City and designed by Richard Hopper of Jacobson-Westergaard and Associates of Estherville. The 10-foot wide trail involved 10,393 square yards of five inch paving.

Dickinson county won the top award for the Subdivision category greater than 15,000 square yards of paving for the East Okoboji Beach grading, paving and drainage project. The project in the 95-acre subdivision consisted of over 42,000 square yards of paving and 151 low impact development drainage practices. Engineers for the project were Scott Brunsvold and Jeff Rose of Jacobson-Westergaard and Associates of Estherville. The general contractor was Concrete Technologies of Urbandale.

Statewide, 55 projects were nominated for the awards. The projects were judged on a number of criteria, including design, quality control, general appearance, smoothness and workmanship, contractor management, safety and project complexity.

The projects were judged by representatives of the Iowa Concrete Paving Association and the Iowa Department of Transportation.
